The first sequencing of a woman DNA

In their journey of better understanding of DNA, Dutch scientists from Leiden University Medical Center have completed the first sequencing of a woman DNA. The encoded DNA belongs to one of their female researchers, clinical geneticist Marjolein Kriek.

The sequencing of Marjolein Kriek DNA took about a half of year to be completed and reached an estimated cost of about 63.000 dollars.

The project is not completed yet, a further in-depth genomic analysis is expected to be done in the next half of year.

From 2001 and until now when the first human DNA sequencing was completed, scientists have announced the encoding of four men DNA and also the DNA of some animals.

Since male's genome contains both the X and Y chromosome and since it is thought to have undergone harsher selection in human evolution, the male DNA was the subject of focus for geneticist so far.

But after sequencing four male DNA, the scientist needed to look into the differences between man and woman genome, which has 2 X chromosomes.

In the next few years more and more genomes will be sequenced which will allow scientist to figure out more about DNA and could lead to diseases prevention and treatment.
